What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced training obtained via a master’s degree in nursing. This graduate degree combines both didactic and clinical training to enable the NP to diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions, depending upon the area of training and specific state legislature. In North Carolina, NP’s can practice in a fairly independent manner with a collaborating physician. They can order and interpret diagnostic tests, perform physical exams, prescribe medications and perform minor procedures, all depending upon their degree of experience, area of specialty and clinical setting.
